Hildegard von Bingen, also known as the Sibyl of the Rhine, was an 11th century German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, painter, philosopher, mystic, visionary and healer. She was considered controversial because she was a vocal female critic of church corruption, a bold preacher during an era that forbade women to teach, and a defiant leader who challenged local bishops. Despite all controversies, she was highly revered for her visions, music, and medical writings during her life and was eventually declared a saint.
