Although the art produced during the Dutch Golden Age is usually associated with male artists, women were equally active as artists and innovators in the seventeenth-century Netherlands. The names and careers of many women were erased in the centuries to follow. While restricted from some formal training, many women thrived as artists, particularly in still-life and portraiture. We will examine some of their works with a particular focus on the lives and works of two outstanding representatives; Clara Peeters and Judith Leyster.
